Europe’s energy system is entering a new phase. The electrification of heating, cooling, transport and household energy use is increasing electricity demand and changing when that demand occurs. Without action on the demand side, sharper winter heating peaks and growing summer cooling peaks will intensify pressure on grids, increase system costs and risk making the energy transition less affordable.
Buildings can help address this challenge at source. A high-performing building envelope permanently reduces the energy needed to maintain safe and comfortable indoor temperatures, lowering peak demand before electricity is generated, transported or stored. In winter, this reduces heat losses and allows heat pumps to operate more efficiently. In summer, insulation works together with solar protection, controlled ventilation and appropriate thermal mass to limit heat gains, reduce cooling needs and improve resilience during heatwaves and power-system stress.
The workshop will focus on three connected themes: structural demand reduction, grid readiness and energy-system resilience. It will examine how peak-demand reduction through building renovation can complement flexibility and supply-side investment, how its system value should be modelled, and how policy can ensure that Europe does not respond to inefficient buildings simply by building larger grids and heating and cooling systems.
